In June 2024, a massive rock slide brought around 6,000 m³ of rock onto the road and the cycle path running alongside it. The important transport link was closed for several months as a result.
Our team was deployed immediately after the event and was responsible for the geological and geotechnical assessment, the planning of the protective measures and the site supervision throughout the entire remediation process.
Challenges on the steep slope
Securing the steep slope under high time pressure was particularly challenging – a lot of the work had to be carried out manually in the upper part of the slope using rope safety. Mechanical support was only possible in later phases.
Overview of implemented measures:
- Construction of a 90 metre long and 6 metre high wire rope barrier
- Use of state-of-the-art technologies such as Rock&Safe and additional concrete crash barriers
- Completion of the work faster than planned – also thanks to intensive weekend and public holiday work
- Final measures such as asphalting and spraying greenery are still ongoing and may temporarily lead to minor restrictions
From 24 March, bus route 720 (Krems - Melk) will also be running regularly again.
Cooperation as the key to success
Our expertise not only made a significant contribution to safety, but also provided political support for media communication. A big thank you to everyone involved in the project - especially to the workers from the rock construction companies, who worked extremely hard to implement the measures on site.
