The Sibiu–Pitești motorway is one of Romania’s most important infrastructure projects. As part of Pan-European Corridor IV, it will improve connections between Central and South-Eastern Europe and enhance mobility within the region. iC is responsible for the preliminary and detailed design of the twin-tube tunnel and will oversee the project through to the construction phase.
Planning based on geological findings
The tunnel is being constructed using the New Austrian Tunnelling Method (NATM) and is 1.35 kilometres long. Each of the two tunnel tubes has two lanes and a hard shoulder. Two pedestrian crossings and one vehicle crossing provide a link between the tubes and enhance operational safety.
The subsoil as a basis for planning
The planning was based on a comprehensive geological and geotechnical assessment of the subsoil. On this basis, all key structural components were designed, including the tunnel portals, the cross-passages between the tubes and the drainage systems.
On the way to completion
Construction work is now in its final stages. Around 90 per cent of the project has already been completed, marking an important milestone for construction phase 4.
As work progresses on the construction site, it becomes clear how detailed planning and technical expertise are coming together to create a durable piece of infrastructure. Once completed, the Curtea de Argeș Tunnel will make a significant contribution to the efficiency of the Romanian transport network and further strengthen the link along Pan-European Corridor IV.
