Expansion of the ÖBB training workshop Vienna | Space for modern learning

New laboratories, training rooms and a 3D printing area create space for practical training and forward-looking learning.

ÖBB has expanded its training workshop in Vienna to meet the growing demand for qualified specialists in the railway sector. The newly adapted parts of the building now feature modern laboratories, training rooms and a 3D printing area, offering young people practical learning conditions. iC took on the role of local construction supervisor (ÖBA) and ensured that everything ran smoothly and that all quality and safety requirements were met.

New space and modern equipment

For the expansion, an annex to the existing training workshop that had previously been rented out was adapted, and additional space was rented at the neighbouring Hebbelplatz 5. The new premises were designed to be functional and future-oriented in order to create optimal conditions for training, research and exchange.

The following were created on a total of 2,100 m²:
• Laboratories for electrical engineering, mechanics and digitalisation
• Training rooms for theory and practice
• A 3D printing room for innovative manufacturing methods
• Common rooms and sanitary facilities including cloakrooms
• Technical and storage areas

Focus on education and sustainability

The expansion will enable around 45 additional apprentices to be trained in future – an important contribution to securing skilled workers in Austria's infrastructure sector. At the same time, the project focuses on energy-efficient building technology, modern learning concepts and inclusive training rooms that combine innovation, sustainability and education.
