The glacier-fed Isel River poses particular challenges for Lienz due to its dynamic nature and seasonal water flow. After three winters of carefully planned construction work, the flood protection project is now entering its final phase. Despite exceptionally difficult winter conditions on site, the work remains fully on schedule.
Implementation over three construction winters – progress despite difficult conditions
The work was carried out over three winters, specifically during periods of low water. Even challenging weather conditions and particularly cold spells did not slow down the progress of the project: the measures are still fully on schedule and are now in their final phase.

Bridge and new riverbank areas by May 2026
The new Isel pedestrian bridge is scheduled to open by the end of April. The “Sonnenlounge” riverside promenade and a recreation area near the Schlossbrücke bridge will follow in May. In addition, the pedestrian areas on both banks will be redesigned and the paths along the Isel will be significantly improved.
Ecological compensation measure with side channel
In addition to the flood protection measures, a new side channel was created near the castle bridge. This measure serves to enhance the ecological value of the water area and creates additional habitats.
