The extension of the U2 is one of Vienna's most important infrastructure projects and will bring sustainable improvements to public transport. Two major construction milestones demonstrate the visible progress of the project. iC is supporting the work with geological and geotechnical expertise and ensuring precision, safety and quality during the tunnel construction work.
Milestone 1: Last tunnel breakthrough at Neubaugasse
The last tunnel breakthrough has been completed at the future Neubaugasse U2 station, marking the end of all excavation work in this section. The station will become a central hub between the U2 and U3 lines and will significantly relieve the existing network.
iC was involved here with detailed geological and hydrogeological documentation and precise monitoring of underground and surface movements to ensure the stability of the structure in a densely built-up area.
Milestone 2: ‘Deborah’ reaches Augustinplatz
After travelling approximately two kilometres from Matzleinsdorfer Platz, the tunnel boring machine ‘Deborah’ has reached Augustinplatz, successfully completing the first of two tunnels. A total of 1,495 ring segments were installed and 83,000 cubic metres of earth excavated.
This breakthrough marks the completion of half of the tunnel driving. After a maintenance phase, ‘Deborah’ will be used for the second tunnel in autumn. From 2030, the new U2 will connect four additional stations – Matzleinsdorfer Platz, Reinprechtsdorfer Straße, Pilgramgasse and Neubaugasse – significantly increasing the capacity of Vienna's underground network.
Looking ahead
With these milestones achieved, the completion of the U2 extension is one step closer. The project stands for efficient mobility and the sustainable development of public transport in Vienna. The new U2 line is scheduled to go into operation in 2030.
