A new psychiatric facility is being built at the Favoriten Clinic in Vienna on behalf of the Vienna Health Association, designed to meet the growing demands in the field of mental health and to provide a physical environment that supports modern therapeutic approaches.
Significant expansion of capacity and a comprehensive care plan
The new building at the Favoriten Clinic will significantly increase psychiatric capacity by 2029 – from the current 44 beds to 120 in future. For the first time, specialised services for children and young people will also be established at this site, including 40 beds.
The new facility brings together various forms of care under one roof. In addition to inpatient wards, it will offer outpatient services, day clinics and specialist therapy units. The range of services is complemented by an on-site school, designed specifically to support young patients during their treatment.
Project involvement and complex implementation
iC is involved in the project alongside the local building authority in the areas of building construction, building services and electrical engineering – from the tendering phase through to the construction phase.
The new building comprises approximately 20,500 m² of net floor area spread over six storeys. During the construction work, around 50,000 m³ of excavated material will be moved and approximately 9,000 tonnes of demolition waste will be generated, which will be sorted by type and returned to the material cycle.
Architecture as part of therapy
A key element of the project is the design of the built environment. Clear layouts, generous natural light and well-designed indoor and outdoor spaces help to create an environment that supports recovery whilst also facilitating the day-to-day running of the clinic.
In this context, architecture is seen not merely as a shell, but as an active component of modern therapeutic approaches.
Contribution to Vienna’s healthcare infrastructure
As part of the Vienna Health Network’s largest modernisation programme, the project is making a significant contribution to the further development of Vienna’s healthcare infrastructure and to meeting the growing demand for mental health services.
Completion is scheduled for 2029.
