The striking cable-stayed bridge between the Spittelau and Jägerstraße stations on the U6 underground line underwent a scheduled major inspection. PCD-ZT carried out the routine inspection on behalf of Wiener Linien. The aim of the measure was to comprehensively assess the current condition of the bridge and identify any potential defects at an early stage – a significant contribution to the long-term safety of the U6 infrastructure.
Thorough examination of the entire structure
During the inspection, the entire bridge was systematically examined, with a particular focus on the supporting structure and all safety-relevant components. The scope of services included concrete tests (carbonation depth and compressive strength), crack width measurements and the measurement of selected steel components. All accessible areas were assessed step by step in order to obtain as accurate a picture as possible of the structural condition.
Use of special equipment – even at night
Special access solutions were required in order to reach all components. Lifting platforms and aerial work platforms, boats, truck-mounted aerial work platforms and rail-bound vehicles were used. Individual work steps were deliberately moved to night-time hours in order to minimise disruption to the ongoing operation of the U6.
Working at lofty heights
A particular focus of this year's main inspection was the assessment of the bridge piers at a height of around 30 to 40 metres. With the help of a truck-mounted aerial work platform, the PCD-ZT team was able to inspect even these hard-to-reach areas in detail and document the results comprehensively. In addition to the technical challenges, the work also offered impressive views over Vienna.
