In May of this year, our experts played a key role in the scheduled maintenance of the Wendelberg Tunnel. The semi-annual closure allowed not only for the routine cleaning of the tunnel walls and the maintenance of the drainage system, but also for a thorough inspection of the slope protection systems at the tunnel portals – a crucial measure for road safety.
Protection Against Rockfall Through Verified Safety Systems
Particular attention was given to the pre-tensioned wire mesh on the rock faces. These nets protect passing vehicles from falling rocks and are therefore a central element in the tunnel's safety concept. Careful inspections allowed us to identify and resolve potential weak points early – without affecting traffic outside of the maintenance window.
Proactive Planning Prevents Closures
Our approach: maintenance with foresight. By carrying out such measures during planned maintenance periods, we minimize the risk of unplanned closures. Close collaboration with the relevant authorities ensured that all work was completed smoothly and on time – to the satisfaction of all parties involved.
The Wendelberg Tunnel: A Key Connection in the Region
Since it opened in 1987, the 483-meter-long Wendelberg Tunnel has significantly improved traffic flow on the B21. It replaces the steep, winding Steinpass and enhances road safety for thousands of commuters and travelers each day. With the addition of an emergency escape tunnel commissioned in 2019, the Wendelberg Tunnel now meets the highest safety standards – even in emergency situations.
Infrastructure Maintanance that Makes a Difference
The Wendelberg Tunnel is a prime example: strategic maintenance is more than just a duty – it is an active contribution to the safety and efficiency of our transport networks. With technical expertise and forward-looking planning, we at iC ensure that everyone continues to reach their destination safely and reliably.
