A new chapter in Austria’s cultural heritage has begun on the Siemens grounds in Floridsdorf. iC played a key role in this forward-looking project by providing project control and contributed significantly to its successful completion.
A Milestone for Science and Building Culture
With a usable area of 13,000 m² and an impressive 130,000 linear metres of bookshelves, the new depot offers ideal storage conditions for valuable literature collections. The majority comes from the archives of the University of Vienna, but the Vienna University of Technology, the University of Applied Arts, the Academy of Fine Arts and GeoSphere Austria also benefit from the new infrastructure.
The demand for a central and modern storage location was great - the search for it goes back over a century, to the first, never realised plans of the architect Otto Wagner. With the new location in Floridsdorf, a sustainable and functional solution has now been created.
Smart logistics for students
Despite the geographical relocation, access to scientific literature remains guaranteed for students and researchers: Electrically powered shuttle vehicles commute between the depot and university locations twice a day. The University of Vienna is using the space freed up in its main library to expand its modern work and study areas by 2027.
A sustainable timber hybrid building with a landmark effect
