Integration into Vienna's water supply
The new waterworks will be built by 2030 and will supplement the existing supply infrastructure of the city of Vienna. It will use groundwater resources from protected areas of the Danube Island and from Nußdorf. The aim is to provide additional capacity and ensure security of supply even on peak days.
Structural design and plant structure
In future, 17 groundwater wells will be connected to the plant. The maximum output is around 1,000 litres of drinking water per second. A construction pit approximately ten metres deep with a base area of around 78 by 34 metres is planned for the construction. iC is responsible for the structural design of the construction pit as well as the static dimensioning and integration of the central plant components into the overall structure.
Filtration, disinfection and operating concept
The water is treated using a multi-stage filter system based on natural purification processes. After several filtration steps, the water is disinfected using UV light. The client is working with several universities to optimise the processes. Individual process steps are already being tested in a pilot plant during the construction phase and are being scientifically monitored.
Construction phases and measures in the surrounding area
Preparatory measures will began in autumn 2025. From 2026, cycle paths and footpaths on the Danube Island will be diverted in sections to enable safe construction site operations. The structure will be greened and integrated into the existing landscape.
Significance for future supply
The Danube Island waterworks will supplement the existing supply with additional capacity from local groundwater. The combination of multi-stage treatment, accompanying pilot research and robust construction will result in a plant that is designed for long-term operation and future adaptations. Vienna is thus creating additional reserves for times of high demand and strengthening the technical basis for a stable drinking water supply in the city.
