New Funicular Railway in Hallstatt | Kick-off for a Modern Visitor Experience

|   Projects

Initiated by Salzwelten, Hasenauer.Architekten, and the Doppelmayr Group

A major step forward for the Salzkammergut region: the historic funicular railway connecting Hallstatt to the high valley and Salzwelten is being replaced by a completely new, state-of-the-art system.

Increased Capacity and Enhanced Visitor Comfort

The new funicular will more than double its current capacity, increasing from 24 to 60 passengers per trip. This upgrade will lead to faster access to Hallstatt’s iconic salt mine attractions while also offering a smoother, more enjoyable ride in a modernized setting.

Project Timeline

  • April 2025: Construction begins with the installation of 43 deep foundation columns and essential safety infrastructure
  • September 2025: Shutdown and dismantling of the existing railway, which has been in service since 1979
  • June 2026: Grand opening of the new system

Engineering Expertise Behind the Scenes

Our geotechnical specialists are playing a critical role in this project. We are responsible for designing the rockfall protection systems and planning the foundations that will secure the new railway infrastructure. Their work ensures safety, precision, and long-term resilience, even in the alpine environment of this sensitive and symbolic location.

Architectural Integration in a UNESCO World Heritage Site

Both stations will be entirely reimagined:

  • The valley station will feature an airy, spacious design, carefully adapted to fit within the surrounding UNESCO World Heritage landscape.
  • At the summit, guests will be welcomed by a new visitor center, complete with a panoramic terrace and a restaurant offering sweeping views over Hallstatt and the surrounding mountains.
