The Pfaffensteig Tunnel is being built as a twin-tube railway tunnel, each tube carrying a single track, and will in future link Stuttgart Airport’s long-distance railway station with the existing Gäubahn line. The project will thus strengthen key transport hubs and make an important contribution to the further development of rail transport in south-west Germany.
Progress and project status
In April 2024, the planning approval documents were submitted to the Federal Railway Authority, and initial preparatory work has already begun. The line is currently scheduled to open at the end of 2032.
The project is being implemented as part of a rail partnership model that covers all relevant project phases. It is based on a multi-party contract that involves all contractors and facilitates close cooperation throughout the project phases.
The iC in the context of the project
iC is part of this project and is involved in the overall planning as well as the design of civil engineering structures. The aim is to bring together complex technical, regulatory and implementation-related requirements at an early stage and to integrate them into the planning in a coordinated manner.
Infrastructure development with a vision for the future
Given its size and complexity, the Pfaffensteig Tunnel is a prime example of modern infrastructure development. As well as improving transport links, the project will significantly reduce journey times and create an efficient, sustainable rail link for the future.
