In Vienna's Stubenviertel district, the Posthöfe complex was completed and officially opened after several years of planning and construction. The listed building ensemble, which was built between the 16th and 19th centuries and expanded several times, is one of the most distinctive structures in Vienna's first district. The former post office building has been modernised and now offers space for living, working and leisure.
iC played a key role in this transformation, providing comprehensive project management, contract and change management, procurement process support, building physics expertise and technical audits.
Usage concept and spatial structure
Covering an area of around 22,000 m², 38 flats, 129 apartment-like hotel units, offices, co-working areas such as Ruby Works, restaurants and leisure facilities were created. This has created a diverse mix of uses that transforms the historic site into a lively urban quarter. The ground floor area opens up like a gallery to the urban space, creating a connection between the interior and exterior.
Architecture and technical implementation
The largest inner courtyard has been landscaped and will be semi-publicly accessible in future – as a passageway between Postgasse and Dominikanerbastei. All inner courtyards have been adapted to their respective uses, landscaped and calmed. Beneath the site is a new five-storey underground car park, which complements the spa, fitness and ancillary rooms of the hotel area. Modern building technology and efficient planning have made it possible to preserve the historic structure while adapting it to today's requirements.
Preservation of historical monuments and urban development
In the course of the renovation, historical building elements – including vaults and façades from various construction phases – were carefully restored and deliberately left visible. This preserves the architectural character while at the same time creating new possibilities for use.
Denkmalpflege und Stadtentwicklung
Im Zuge der Sanierung wurden historische Bauelemente – darunter Gewölbe und Fassaden aus verschiedenen Bauphasen – sorgfältig instand gesetzt und bewusst sichtbar belassen. So bleibt der architektonische Charakter erhalten, während gleichzeitig neue Nutzungsmöglichkeiten geschaffen wurden.
