S36 Murtal expressway | Closing a key traffic gap in Styria

A new 12-kilometre section between Judenburg and St. Georgen ob Judenburg closes the gap in the S36 and completes the corridor through the Mur Valley.

The S36 Murtal expressway closes an infrastructure gap in Styria that has existed for decades. iC has been involved in project management for this project since 2017 and is supporting ASFINAG in a complex undertaking that combines road safety, environmental compatibility and regional connectivity.

A missing link in the Murtal valley

Currently, there is a 12-kilometre gap in the S36 between Judenburg and St. Georgen ob Judenburg. The planned construction of this section will complete the transport corridor through the Murtal valley and create a continuous connection. The project will thus make a significant contribution to the efficient transport infrastructure in Styria and improve the region's accessibility in the long term.

Project management as a central control function

Since 2017, iC has been part of the ASFINAG project team and is responsible for project management during the submission and construction phases. The scope of services includes coordination of the technical disciplines, support with procurement processes, and cost and schedule control. In addition, iC oversees important legal procedures and ensures that all project participants work together efficiently and in a coordinated manner.

Tunnel construction in narrow valleys

A special feature of the project is the route close to the existing B317. This avoids additional widening of the transport corridor in the already narrow Murtal valley. Key elements of the new construction are three tunnels built using the open construction method, which reduce noise and traffic pollution while improving connections between the communities:

  • Rothenthurm (690 metres)

  • St. Peter ob Judenburg (640 metres)

  • Wöll (590 metres)

Environmental sustainability and infrastructure with long-term impact

The planning places great emphasis on protecting sensitive areas. In particular, the Natura 2000 corridor along the Mur river is being taken into account in the project development. The project is currently undergoing an environmental impact assessment, accompanied by extensive documentation. The S36 Murtal expressway will not only create a new transport link, but also an infrastructure project with long-term added value for mobility, safety and regional development. The main construction work is scheduled for the period from 2029 to 2034.
