With the Solar 4Kosovo II project, the city of Pristina is taking a major step toward a climate-friendly future. In May, the master plan for this forward-looking district heating initiative was presented—a joint effort involving the municipality, international partners, and our expertise as part of the implementing consortium together with CES.
District Heating Expansion with Vision
The project aims to significantly expand Pristina’s existing district heating network and substantially increase the share of renewable energy sources. At its core is a solar thermal plant with 63,000 m² of collector area, which will deliver an additional 50 MW of thermal output to six rapidly growing urban districts: Tophane, Kalabri, Lakrishtë, Mahalle e Muhaxherëve, Gjinaj South, and Old Prishtina.
These areas were selected based on detailed CO₂ analyses—they offer particularly high emission reduction potential relative to the investment costs. This ensures maximum impact through targeted use of funds.
From Planning to Implementation
As an experienced engineering firm, iC group is providing comprehensive support for the project—from technical planning and tender preparation to construction supervision. Together with our partner CES, we are working in a consortium to ensure that Solar 4Kosovo II is both technically sound and economically successful.
With a total investment of €80 million, the initiative is one of the largest of its kind in the region. It is co-financed by the German development bank KfW, the EU (WBIF), and the EBRD—a strong international alliance for clean energy and sustainable urban development.
Sustainability That Makes a Difference
In addition to reducing CO₂ emissions, the project delivers further benefits: by replacing decentralized heating sources, air quality improves, emissions are reduced, and energy supply becomes significantly more reliable—a crucial step toward improving the quality of life in Pristina.
