Sound measurements at open-air events | The iC ensures precision for an undisturbed concert experience

|   Projects

Major open-air events captivate audiences with impressive stage shows, powerful sound and a unique atmosphere. To ensure that the concert experience also complies with legal requirements, iC provides precise sound engineering planning and real-time monitoring.

In Austria, statutory limits apply to noise levels affecting audiences and local residents at open-air events. Acoustic assessments therefore often form the basis for the authorisation of such events and ensure that the permissible noise exposure limits are complied with.

Acoustics right from the planning stage

iC is usually commissioned by event management companies working on behalf of the organisers. The work often begins as early as the planning permission stage, with the preparation of acoustic forecasts. Calculations of sound propagation are used to assess how the sound will affect the surrounding area.

Real-time monitoring during the concert

During the event, iC monitors sound levels using calibrated measuring instruments at the control points specified by the authorities. Before and after each measurement, the instruments are checked using a sound calibrator to ensure accurate readings. The measured values are continuously recorded and simultaneously transmitted in real time to an online portal. This allows the current values to be monitored at any time and enables an immediate response if necessary.

Accurate measurements to ensure everything runs smoothly

The assessment is based on the A-weighted sound pressure level, averaged over 30 minutes. If it appears that a limit is about to be exceeded, the client is informed immediately and appropriate measures are agreed upon.
If the requirements are not met, this may result in regulatory consequences such as warnings or fines. In the event of a repeat offence, this may even affect future event licences.

Comprehensive engineering services in a unique setting

Acoustic measurement and noise control planning are among the wide range of services offered by iC – from infrastructure projects to open-air events. Concerts, in particular, combine complex engineering work with a unique live atmosphere, and where necessary, measures can be coordinated immediately during the event itself.

Teamwork for the open-air season

As soon as the dates for the open-air season are finalised, the team coordinates and fairly allocates the assignments, as they mainly take place in the evenings and at weekends. This year alone, our Air Quality and Climate Protection team has already been deployed at more than 20 major events. These include concerts by Linkin Park, the Foo Fighters and Madison Beer, as well as upcoming events such as the 90s Festival and a gig by Die Toten Hosen.
