On 9 December, the starting signal was given for the new international long-distance bus terminal at the Stadion Center on Handelskai in Leopoldstadt. In future, the terminal will bundle international long-distance bus connections in one location, thus creating another central hub for long-distance passenger transport in Vienna.
iC in the project
iC took on the coordination of the construction site, local construction supervision and project management in a joint venture. The focus is on coordinating interfaces, coordinating schedules and costs, and ensuring quality and compliance directly on site.
A location that saves travel time
Handelskai was deliberately chosen as the location: its direct connection to the motorway network (A23) and good public transport links are intended to reduce unnecessary journeys through the city and improve the overall travel experience. This creates another central pillar of long-distance passenger transport alongside Vienna Airport and Vienna Central Station.
Design
The architectural concept for the new long-distance bus terminal is clear, open, bright and well-organised. The striking and airy roof landscape consists of alternating glazed and green areas. It provides protection from the weather and allows daylight to pass through. In addition, improved footpaths and cycle paths to the Danube are planned, which will also enhance the development of the surrounding riverside promenade. An adjacent footbridge creates a new connection to the banks of the Danube.
Around 30 covered bus platforms with weather-protected boarding areas are planned for travellers and ongoing operations. In addition, spacious waiting areas with digital signage and free Wi-Fi will be created, along with ticket and information counters, barrier-free sanitary facilities, lockers and other service areas.
