After a total of 4.2 kilometres of mechanised tunnelling, the tunnel boring machine reached the target shaft at Augustinplatz. This means both tunnel tubes between Matzleinsdorfer Platz and Augustinplatz have been completed, marking a further significant construction stage of the U2 extension, which will sustainably strengthen public transport in the south and west of Vienna in future.
A four-kilometre tunnel beneath Vienna
Since September 2024, the tunnel boring machine "Debohra" has advanced from Matzleinsdorfer Platz to Augustinplatz. Along the way, it excavated a total of 4.2 kilometres of tunnel, achieving advance rates of up to 30 metres per day. The successful breakthrough marks the completion of both tunnel tubes.

The Extended U2
Once completed, the extended U2 will connect the stations Matzleinsdorfer Platz, Reinprechtsdorfer Straße, Pilgramgasse and Neubaugasse. With its planned commissioning in 2030, the U2 extension will make a significant contribution to sustainable mobility and further strengthen public transport in Vienna.
