A model urban district is taking shape on the grounds of the former Prinz-Leopold Barracks in Regensburg – innovative and entirely CO₂-neutral.

With the construction of a modern energy center, a decisive step has been taken toward sustainable urban development. Our experts are responsible for planning and implementing the geothermal system.

Deep Geothermal Energy as the Foundation for Climate-Neutral Heating

In the first construction phase, our team is installing 240 geothermal probes reaching depths of up to 70 meters. These boreholes tap into geothermal energy and feed a local low-temperature heating network. Heat pumps raise the environmental heat to 40 °C, and booster pumps within the buildings further increase it to up to 65 °C – a fully regenerative system that eliminates the need for fossil fuels.

A Smart Mix of Renewable Energy Sources

In addition to geothermal energy, the new district also utilizes ambient air, wastewater heat, and photovoltaic systems. PV panels on roofs and facades supply the electricity for the entire energy center. Surplus energy is stored in battery and hot water tanks or, in the future, fed into a hydrogen storage facility. A new elementary school, sports facilities, and e-charging stations will also directly benefit from this sustainable energy concept.

A Lighthouse Project with Educational Value

With an investment volume of around €21 million (excluding PV), the project is supported by the German Federal Office for Economic Affairs and Export Control (BAFA) and urban development funding programs. The PrinzLeoInfoBase is also being created as a communication and training center – a barrier-free showroom where citizens, schools, and professionals can experience and understand the energy system firsthand.

What was once a military site is now becoming a symbol of the urban energy transition. iC is helping to shape this future – with expertise, foresight, and a strong focus on sustainability.
