On 27 November, the event ‘Urban R/Evolution – Living Space of the Future’ took place at the iC Headquarters in Vienna. Experts from the fields of architecture, construction, research and civil society initiatives discussed challenges and solutions for future urban and spatial structures. iC organised the evening together with Generationendialog.
Thematic framework and content focus
The event provided a framework for exchange on climate-related, spatial and social developments. The focus was on how cities and regions are responding to changing conditions and what role planning, material cycles and technical infrastructure play in this. Participants came from the fields of practice, research, administration and various initiatives.
Technical input on cycles in the construction industry
The first presentation was given by Thomas Glanzer (Alu König Stahl). He provided insights into the potential of the circular economy in the construction industry, presented approaches to material flows, dismantling processes and documentation methods, and discussed the structural changes that are necessary to keep components in the system for longer.
Sustainable architecture as a design task
In the second keynote speech, Karin Stieldorf (TU Vienna) presented ideas on sustainable architecture, materials and construction methods. Using examples from research and teaching, she showed how sustainable constructions and planning methods can be developed that take into account both technical requirements and spatial quality.
Inspiration from the Lebensraum Manifesto
Wilhelm Reismann then presented the emerging ‘Lebensraum Manifesto’. It brings together perspectives on space, energy, mobility, water and construction methods and invites readers to question existing patterns of thinking. Participants were invited to contribute concrete ideas, experiences or visionary approaches that will be incorporated into the further development of the manifesto.
Joint exchange
The evening ended with open discussions at iC Headquarters. Technical assessments, personal impressions and different perspectives were shared and continued. The resulting ideas will be taken up again and explored in greater depth in future dialogue formats.
