International infrastructure projects present not only technical but also contractual challenges. This makes a thorough understanding of the underlying contract models all the more important. A two-day workshop was therefore held at iC in mid-June, which focused in depth on the FIDIC contract models and their practical application.
Knowledge for international project work
The workshop was led by Dipl.-Ing. Robert Aloys Werth, an international arbitrator, mediator, FIDIC-accredited trainer and co-author of the current FIDIC Green Book. He was assisted by Muhamed Veseli, an expert in international procurement and contracts at iC.
From the Red Book to the Green Book
The focus was on the various FIDIC contract models and their areas of application. In addition to the Red Book, where planning is carried out by the client, and the Yellow Book, where planning is the responsibility of the contractor, the Green Book was discussed in particular.
The Green Book – Short Form of Contract (2021) is becoming increasingly important, particularly for projects of lower complexity. Thanks to its simplified contract administration, it offers advantages for numerous internationally financed projects and provides a flexible alternative to the established contract models.
Practical insights into tendering and contract management
Participants were given a detailed overview of the differences between the various contract forms, the respective role of the engineer, and key aspects of tendering, procurement and contract management. Practical examples from ongoing projects enabled a direct link to day-to-day work and demonstrated how the contract models are applied in different project situations.
The content was particularly relevant for professionals working as FIDIC engineers, in technical support roles, as PIU consultants or as representatives of lenders on international projects.
In-depth insights from the interview
Following the workshop, the topics covered were explored in greater depth in interviews with Robert Werth and Muhamed Veseli. The focus was on current developments relating to the Green Book, the practical application of FIDIC contracts, and experiences gained from international projects.
