Vienna is currently home to an infrastructure project of international scale: the expansion of the Neusiedl/Steinfeld reservoir – planned and technically implemented by our employees at PCD.
More Storage for a Growing City
The Neusiedl/Steinfeld reservoir is the most important drinking water reservoir of Austria’s capital. To ensure supply security for future generations, the current storage volume of 600 million liters will be increased to 800 million liters by 2028. In the long term, an expansion to over 1 billion liters is planned. The ambitious goal: the largest closed drinking water reservoir in the world.
Technical Excellence for Generations
PCD is responsible for the complete technical planning of this large-scale monolithic reinforced concrete structure. The requirements are exceptionally high – in terms of quality, durability, and water tightness:
- More than 35,000 m³ of water-retaining concrete
- Approximately 5,400 tons of steel
- Construction without expansion joints
- Maximum water tightness for generations to come
The structure is designed to withstand even extreme climatic conditions and enables long-term water storage without any loss in quality.
Contributing to the Vienna Spring Water Main
Since 1873, the Vienna Spring Water Main has supplied the city with pure spring water from the Alps. The expansion of the Neusiedl/Steinfeld reservoir is a key element in safeguarding this sustainable supply system for the future. Our colleagues are making a vital contribution to environmental and resource protection, as well as to the quality of life in one of the world’s most livable cities.
Construction progress and outlook
Climate Councillor Jürgen Czernohorszky and Wiener Wasser recently visited the construction site to assess the current progress. Despite weeks of rainfall and summer heat, the work is on schedule – the expanded storage facility is expected to be completed by 2028.
