BAUEN.DIGITAL.Niederösterreich – BIM in practice

Bau.Energie.Umwelt Cluster Niederösterreich and the Building Directorate of the Province of Lower Austria invited interested parties to the provincial capital of St. Pölten on 16 May 2019 to take part in a joint event on the subject of BIM Building Information Modelling.

BIM will transform the entire building procurement chain: More transparency, more efficiency and higher quality in many areas are just some of the positive effects that we want to achieve with the help of BIM. The necessary systems, processes and mindsets have already been found in other sectors such as the automotive and aircraft industries for decades. In the building industry, however, these first have to be created and established internationally. The reasons why the building industry lags behind include its complexity and decentralised production model as well as the fact that buildings are manufactured as unique objects.

Lecturers from many specialist areas of the building sector shared their experience of BIM and described working with this innovative method, from the project idea via operation to recycling.

Landesrat Martin Eichtinger, Helmut Miernicki of ecoplus and Wolfgang Viehauser, Management Board Member of Hypo NOE, made the opening speeches while the Building Directors of the Province of Lower Austria, Josef Bichler and the Bundesimmobiliengesellschaft BIG, Wolfgang Malzer, suggested in their lectures that BIM will only bring sustainable change to the building sector if clients define their requirements in a BIM-conform manner. Ideally, these requirements should be based on international standards – enhanced, if necessary, by national and/or internal company add-ons.

On the basis of this detailed definition of client requirements the necessary design steps can then be initiated in order to ensure that the digital building model meets the given criteria. Gerfried Falb, partner of iC consulenten, and Michael Hallinger, BIM expert at ODE – office for digital engineering, delivered a lecture on this subject entitled “BIM from the planning perspective”.

Further presentations covered the experience of executing and industrial companies with BIM and underlined the importance of pilot projects. In his résumé, Wilhelm Reismann, Honorary Professor at Vienna University of Technology, summarised the key statements of the lectures and highlighted the issue of the current development and settlement models with reference to BIM.

Thanks to the diversity of the lectures and the subsequent, intense debate the event was a complete success. In addition to this, participants were able to establish important contacts with BIM experts and exchange specialist know-how.
