Project objectives

Revitalisation and redesign of the existing buildings for the future university use by the Central European University.

Project description

The Central European University (CEU) is a private university that offers bachelor’s and master’s courses and doctoral studies in the humanities and the social sciences. The objective of the Vienna Core Campus Development Project (VCCDP) is to refurbish the historic complex on the site of the Otto Wagner Hospital. The CEU’s development strategy seeks to “reuse/refurbish” the existing buildings while largely excluding any alteration to their existing volumes.

Project data

The area of the Otto Wagner Hospital complex, which forms the basis of the Core Campus Project, contains a total of twelve buildings with around 31,000 m² of usable space. In addition to the classic pavilions that have been used as wards, these also include imposing objects such as the theatre, the kitchen building and the previous administration block. The core of the campus is immediately adjacent to the planned student accommodation and the area for interuniversity cooperation, which are being operationally realised by separate project organisations and design teams.

Project specifics

Particular challenges will include the fulfilment of all listed building requirements, the transformation of a site and buildings previously used as a hospital into university facilities and the interaction with the other projects.
