Project objectives

Revitalisation and redesign of the existing buildings for the future university use by the Central European University.

Project description

The Central European University (CEU) is a private university offering bachelor’s and master’s courses as well as doctoral studies in the humanities and social sciences. As part of the Vienna Core Campus Development Project (VCCDP), the historic Otto Wagner Hospital complex was refurbished following the CEU’s ‘reuse/refurbish’ strategy, largely maintaining the existing building volumes. Particular challenges included complying with listed building requirements, transforming the former hospital buildings for university use, and coordinating with other projects.

Project data

The project area comprises 12 buildings with a total of approx. 31,000 m² of usable space, including pavilions, a theatre, a canteen and administration building. Student accommodation as well as inter-university collaboration areas are nearby and planned independently.
