Extension of the U2 underground line in the context of Vienna’s largest climate protection and infrastructure project.
The extension of Vienna’s U2 line includes five new deep stations with station tubes, connecting tunnels, crosscuts, and shafts along a 6 km stretch from ‘Rathaus’ to Matzleinsdorfer Platz. The ‘Reinprechtsdorfer Straße’ (U2/19) and ‘Pilgramgasse’ (U2/20) stations are deep underground, connecting with Construction Lot U2/17 (track tunnels). Station shafts are built using cut-and-cover with bored piles. The tunnel will be driven from the station shafts through rigid clay and dense sand beneath densely built-up areas. The single-track tunnels have separations of 35 m to 45 m (U2/19) and 66 m to 69 m (U2/20), with a vertical distance of 10 m to 16 m to building foundations. Settlement compensation is planned in certain zones. In U2/19, groundwater lowering via filtering wells is necessary due to high water levels and permeable gravel layers. In U2/20, one station tube passes beneath the U4 line and the Vienna River canal.
• Cross section: station tubes: approx. 95 m²
• Cross section: Crosscuts: 75 m²
