Dual Fuel Project | Energy Security Essity

|   Projects

The energy markets in 2022 were unpredictable and put additional time pressure on the endeavour.

Our partners at CES were awarded the project to plan a substitute fuel supply with heating oil. The plant is due to be operational by April 2024, significantly improving the site's security of energy supply.

In Ortmann, a natural gas outage would have meant a production stop, so the company wanted to have a safeguard in the form of alternative energy sources. LNG gas (liquefied natural gas, -162 °C, 1 bar) and heating oil were options. Due to the complex logistics and high costs of LNG, as well as the existing authorisation for operation using heating oil, the latter was chosen.

The decision was made in favour of a stainless steel tank in a sealed concrete basin to prevent environmental pollution from oil leaks. The project received approval from the district authority of Wr. Neustadt on 28 December 2022. Project implementation began in January 2023 with the clearing of a piece of forest for fire protection purposes, followed later by the construction of a firefighting centre.

Several challenges had to be overcome in order to fulfil the necessary structural requirements. During excavation, old foundations, masonry and floor slabs were uncovered. In addition, a factory sewer ran underground directly next to the planned tank. As there were no plans of the old structures and sewers, unforeseen difficulties had to be managed repeatedly.
