After a renovation period of 5 years, the parliament reopened its doors on January 12 and shines in new glory. In addition to the renovated parts of the building, the "Demokratikum" is a highlight for all visitors.

After 130 years of continuous operation, the decision was made in 2014 to renovate the parliament with a budget of €352.2 million. As a result, all the necessary steps to relocate operations were initially taken until 2017, such as the relocation to the Hofburg and Heldenplatz. Since 2018, a net area of 55,000 m2 has then been extensively renovated, including 740 windows, 600 doors as well as 500 historic lights. In addition, a glass dome measuring around 550 square meters and 28 meters wide was installed in the National Council Chamber, which was flattened in the interests of barrier-free access, illuminating the hall with daylight for the first time. Under the dome is the new "Plenarium," a circular walkway for all visitors.

Furthermore, the unused area of the attic was converted to create new space. The new restaurant Kelsen was created, as well as 4 magnificent terraces and multifunctional rooms. Particularly interesting for visitors is the new "Demokratikum", which covers an area of 1,500 m2. In addition to the history of Austrian democracy, this also deals with the processes of parliament, the development of laws, and the interaction between the media and democracy.

The iC took over the task of project support in the renovation project of the parliament and could ensure a successful renovation of the monument-protected building together with all partners.

The festive opening of the Parliament took place on January 12, 2023, with speeches by Mag. Wolfgang Sobotka (President of the National Council), Günter Kovacs (President of the Federal Council), Doris Bures (Second President of the National Council) and Norbert Hofer (Third President of the National Council). Afterwards, visitors had the opportunity to take a look at the newly renovated parliament building on two open days.
