130 years of the SchafbergBahn | the new ErlebnisQuartier opens its doors

|   Projects

The 'Schafbergbahn', one of the oldest steam cogwheel railways in Austria, shines in new splendour. The historic railway line, which has been transporting visitors up the majestic Schafberg in the Salzkammergut for 130 years, has gained the exciting new 'ErlebnisQuartier'.

The Schafbergbahn was already considered a masterpiece when it opened on 1 August 1893, climbing 1,190 metres in altitude on each journey. With its nostalgic charm, breathtaking views of Lake Wolfgangsee and the surrounding mountain panorama, it has made a name for itself. Now, however, the offerings around the railway have been expanded to provide visitors with an even more unforgettable experience. Work on the new valley station - "ErlebnisQuartier" - took two years. This project aims to offer visitors a comprehensive and varied experience. In its visitor centre, the quarter combines a museum zone including a souvenir shop, its own restaurant with a lakeside terrace and an event area that can be used outside operating hours.

The museum zone not only explores the history of the Schafberg railway, but also deals with shipping on Lake Wolfgangsee. The highlight and centrepiece is the locomotive from 1893. Not only the cuisine of the 'EQ' restaurant is enchanting, but also the view of Lake Wolfgangsee and the mountain Schafberg.

The commitment of the entire team, especially Salzburg AG, in realising this project deserves recognition. Equally impressive is the design concept of the talented architects from 'dunkelschwarz ZT OG'.

The Schafberg railway and its new 'ErlebnisQuartier' welcomes visitors from all over the world to experience the beauty of the Salzkammergut in a unique way. Whether you are travelling on the historic steam cog railway, enjoying the panorama restaurant or exploring the nature adventure trail, the 'Schafbergbahn' promises unforgettable moments and incomparable views of one of Austria's most beautiful regions.
