Future-oriented renovation: Theater an der Wien

|   Projects

At 222 years old, the ‘Theater an der Wien’ is the oldest opera house in the city. It was built in 1801 at the request of Emanuel Schickaneder and according to the plans of Joseph Reymund d.J. and Anton Jäger. Now, for the first time since 1962, it is undergoing a general refurbishment with a focus on a future-oriented improvement of the technology, sustainable operation, and increased safety.

iC is providing project monitoring services for this project. The renovation of the ‘Theater an der Wien’ is being carried out in compliance with the requirements for the protection of historical monuments, as interior areas of the theatre are protected. The building was last refurbished in 1962, and minor work has been carried out continuously since then. Now it is time for a comprehensive renovation of the building as well as its fabric to preserve the opera house, rich in tradition, for the coming decades and to meet the requirements of safety, comfort and contemporary performance.

During the renovation, various aspects will be considered. A sustainable renovation includes the renewal of the building's technical and electrotechnical infrastructure (in an environmentally conscious way?). The safety of the theatre will be improved, and fire safety measures modernised. Operational processes will be optimised through a strategic redesign of the premises. Accessibility throughout the building will also be improved. Event technology will also be upgraded to ensure a seamless and immersive experience.

The general refurbishment also includes the redesign of the entrance and foyers to create an appealing and inviting space. The reopening of the ‘Theater an der Wien’ is planned for autumn 2024. During the renovation, the theatre will be temporarily closed.
