Ice Channel Igls | Construction Start

|   Projects

The conversion of the Igls ice channel will start soon to harmonise it with international standards.

Bodner Bau was awarded the contract following the tender in January. The work will begin soon and should be completed by the end of 2025. The ice channel, built in 1976, no longer meets the standards for international competitions, says Managing Director Matthias Schipflinger. We contribute to this transformation by acting as a foundation surveyor.

The main modifications will affect the lower third of the track, with an extended run-out for bobsleighs that are unable to brake and two new bends that run further downhill after the finish maze. In addition, the women's start will be moved uphill and the finish house will be built on the site of the current roundabout. Construction costs totalling 28 million euros are to be shared equally by the city of Innsbruck, the state of Tyrol and the federal government.

The process of finding a suitable bobsleigh track for the 2026 Winter Olympics also extends to the ice track in Igls. Despite opposition, the Italian organisers have begun construction of a new track, which should be ready in 13 months. Igls could serve as a replacement track in the event of delays.
